The Como San Giovanni train station is the main railway station in the northern Italian town of Como and the larger of the two main railway stations next to Como Lago. It is operated by the state Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and is the last Italian train station on the way to Chiasso. Thus Como has held the position of a border station. He is in possession of the FS- daughter CentoStazioni, which operates 103 medium-sized Italian stations, and is served by trains of Trenitalia, Trenord, the SBB and of their joint ventures TILO.

The station is located west of downtown and is located on the railway line Milano - Chiasso. He is also the starting point of the railway Como- Lecco, which the above route but leaves only after the south San Giovanni train station Albate - Camerlata left hand.

Plant

The transit station has five tracks, four of the passengers are available. The track 1 at a time is the main platform, the tracks 2 and 3 have a central platform, which is connected via underpass to the main platform. The station is equipped besides the usual station facilities (switch) with a customs office for the border crossing to Chiasso, but no more customs inspections are held here since 2008, since Switzerland joined the Schengen Agreement.

At the station forecourt there is a SPT bus station, which operates among other lines to Cernobbio, Bellagio or Menaggio.

History

The Como San Giovanni station was opened in 1875, when the section Albate - Camerlata -Como today's railway line Milano - Chiasso was opened to traffic. In September 1876 received the status of a border station, as the route through the Monte Olimpino was extended through to the Swiss Chiasso. The local railway station was connected to the grid of the Ticino valley railways since 1874. The opening of the Gotthard tunnel in 1882 was part of the Como major north-south axis, since the railway line between Chiasso and Milano represented one of the Südzubringer the Gotthard Railway. 1888 was taken from Albate from the railway to Lecco in operation, the trains were, however, bound by from the beginning to Como San Giovanni.

During the Second World War, the station building was destroyed and replaced by a new building, designed by architect Paolo Perilli, which in 1949 was the use of release. In 2008, the facility was renovated in cooperation between the CentoStazioni and RFI. Among other things, the station was disabled expanded and provided with a blind control system. Also new elevators were installed.

Traffic
