The S-Bahn Milan ( Italian: Servizio ferroviario suburbano di Milano ) is a railway system for rapid passenger transport in the agglomeration Milan. The system was opened on 12 December 2004 and consists of ten lines. However, the S does not derive from fast, but from suburbano ( German: vorortlich ) from. The idea of an underground railway connection between the head stations of Porta Garibaldi and Porta Vittoria dates from the 1960s. The construction of the S- Bahn route ( called Passante Ferroviario ) but was finally resolved until 1983. The construction work began in 1984 with the underground station Repubblica, which was built together with the metro station of the crossing line M3.

In November 1997, the first section between the stations and Porta Venezia excellent property with a forward mode ( island operation in 15 -minute intervals ) was put into operation.

On June 19, the new breakpoint Milano Romolo was opened on the S9 line, where a connection to the metro station on the M2 line is.

At the same time also the offer was extended on many routes and closed cycle gaps in 30 -minute intervals. On the line S2 two pairs of trains in the early afternoon were inserted, but the big clock in the morning gap remained. The S4 line took over the evening traffic on the route Milan - Seveso from the S2 and runs until 0:30 clock every half hour.
