Cruas Nuclear Power Plant

F1

Active reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant is located in the French community Cruas Cruas in the Rhône-Alpes region in the department of Ardèche. The nuclear power plant, which consists of four pressurized water reactors, is located about 15 kilometers from Montelimar, on the right bank of the Rhône.

Key data

The 148 -acre nuclear power plant complex employs approximately 1,250 people. Operator of the nuclear power plant is the French company Electricité de France (EDF). The cooling of the reactor units is carried out with four cooling towers and the Rhone water withdrawn.

The four pressurized water reactors have a net power output of 915 megawatts ( MW) and a gross capacity of 956 MW. The total installed capacity is 3,824 MW, making it one nuclear power plant to the larger in France. Every year it feeds averaged 24.3 billion kilowatt hours into the public power grid and thus provides about five percent of the French electricity consumption and 40 percent of the Rhône -Alpes region.

History

The construction of the first reactor block was started on 1 August 1978 this was on 29 April 1983 in operation. In the years 1978 and 1979 has started with the construction of three additional reactor units, one of which was put into operation last October 27, 1984.

In 1991, the EDF, Framatome and the conseil général de l' Ardèche decided to leave create a painting with the theme " Ecology" on the north cooling tower. 9 climbers created the 155 m high and 12 500 m², this mural in about 3 months after a design by the French artist Jean -Marie Pierret. Approximately 8,000 hours and 4,000 liters of paint were needed for it. The picture with the name Aquarius shows a child who pours water from a conch on a glass pyramid, and to the importance of air and water symbolize. The painting was inaugurated on 16 December 1991.

Safety and incidents

  • On the night of 1 to December 2, 2009 Unit 4 of the nuclear power plant was shut down due to a malfunction of the cooling system and triggered the internal emergency plan. This was due, according to operators vegetable waste in the Rhône, which were caused by heavy rainfall and the cooling water intake clogged. The incident was by the French Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ASN ) classified as a fault in the INES category 2.
