Golfech Nuclear Power Plant

Active reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant Golfech is a French nuclear power plant. It is located in the municipality Golfech (Tarn -et -Garonne) in southwest France on the banks of the Garonne between Toulouse and Agen, opposite the mouth of the Arrats and below the mouth of the Tarn. Owner and operating company is Electricite de France (EDF).

The nuclear power plant consists of two pressurized water reactors, each with 1,310 MW of electric power. The blocks were put into operation in 1991 and 1994. The nuclear power plant is equipped with two natural draft cooling towers, which include more than 170 meters above sea level to the highest cooling towers of Europe and allow a closed cooling circuit. This is necessary because the river Garonne, where nuclear power plant was built, insufficient supplies of water for cooling, especially in summer. The water removal from the Garonne serves only to compensate for the loss due to evaporation and cool the additional circuits of the safety devices.

In 2008, the nuclear power plant has 17.1 billion kWh ( 17.1 TWh ) of electricity, equivalent to a hundred percent coverage of the annual electricity needs of the Midi -Pyrénées region. In the complex, which was originally planned with four blocks, around 650 people are employed.
