Cyprus national football team
The Cyprus national football team represents the Cypriot Football Federation in international tournaments. To date, the team failed to qualify for either a World Cup or a European Football Championship.
History
The national team of Cyprus completed the first unofficial friendly match against Israel in Tel Aviv on July 23, 1949. The game ended 3-3 .. In the previous year had become the Cypriot Football Association joined FIFA.
On November 23, 1960 after independence from Great Britain, Cyprus played the first official international match. As part of the qualification for the 1962 World Cup they met again in Nicosia on Israel and parted 1-1.
The UEFA membership followed in 1962 and the following year Cyprus scored the first victory - 3-1 in a friendly match against Greece.
On February 17, 1968 Cyprus defeated the Switzerland 2-1 in a European Championship qualifier in Nicosia, reaching the first competitive victory of the island.
Cyprus reached 1989, a 1-1 draw against France, which make participation in the 1990 World Cup missed. Despite other similar success on home soil Cyprus had to wait until 1992 to their first away win - a 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands.
Lately Cyprus could significantly improve his results in the qualifying matches.
