Darkness on the Edge of Town is a studio album, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have published in 1978. It appeared three years after Born to Run, Springsteen's first commercially successful album.

General

The album was released only three years after the successful previous album, "Born to Run", as it came in the meantime court battle with his former manager, which reached a preliminary injunction that Springsteen was not allowed to work in the studio. It was in this dispute over false billings of royalties.

While in Born to Run, the losers were the focus, Springsteen found on this album, the working class, people who have little and are at risk of the few still to lose ( Soon as you've got something They sent someone to try and take it away, ...).

Although the album does not hit single ( Prove It All Night # 33; Badlands # 42 ) was the album stayed 97 weeks in the Chartsund reached the Billboard 200 5th place as top spot. From Rolling Stone Magazine, it was listed in its list of the 500 best albums of all time at number 151. The NME ( New Musical Express) chose it the best album of the year 1978.

In 2010, the album Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ The Wild the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, Born to Run and the following three studio albums in the CD box set The Collection 1973 appeared - 84

During the recording sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town were significantly more titles added as were eventually released on the album. Some of the songs used were not hits for other artists: " Because the Night " Patti Smith, "Fire" for Robert Gordon and The Pointer Sisters, "Rendezvous" for Greg Kihn, " This Little Girl" for Gary U.S. Bonds. More titles took Southside Johnny, which appeared on his album Hearts of Stone.

Other songs ( "Independence Day ," " Point Blank ", " The Ties That Bind ", " Sherry Darling " ) appeared on Springsteen's album The River.

Many of the original recordings were then still published over the years. The 4- CD box set Tracks receives several pieces that came from the sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town. As of 2009, Bruce Springsteen prepared then before the publication of further out -takes.

The Promise

16 November 2010, appeared "The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story," a box with 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. CD 1 contains a digitally edited version of "Darkness on the Edge of Town ", CD2 and 3 included under the title "The Promise" 21 unpublished and partially reworked tracks from the recording session. The DVDs include a documentary on the making of Darkness and two live concert recordings ( Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey, 2009). The third DVD (Houston '78 Bootleg: House Cut) is a concert from the "Darkness on the Edge of Town " tour.

The previously released tracks on recordings missing from The Promise largely. A total of 30 additional pieces of the recording sessions were officially released alongside the original album now.
