Born to Run is a rock album by the American singer and songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released in 1975.

Importance

Bruce Springsteen's third album, Born to Run, was his breakthrough in the U.S. and worldwide. Ernest "Boom " Carter and David Sancious left the band after they recorded the theme song Born To Run. After an audition of about 30 drummers and 30 pianists Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg were added to the band. Likewise, Steven Van Zandt was an official member of the E Street Band during the work on the album. Although Springsteen's first two albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ and The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle had gotten good reviews, the commercial success had not materialized. Thus, Bruce Springsteen was under enormous pressure as he took Born To Run as a possible failure of the end of his recording career could have been.

Born To Run is also known for his Wall of Sound. This means that the songs have an enormous density (piano, glockenspiel, saxophone, guitar, horns, drums, bass, Fender Rhodes, tambourine, strings, synthesizers ). Springsteen wanted his own words, that Born To Run sounds like as if Roy Orbison would sing the songs of Bob Dylan.

The concept of the album is the theme of escape ( to escape from the old life and start anew somewhere else ). This theme runs through the entire album. Springsteen said: " ' Born To Run ' has the atmosphere of an endless summer evening. The whole record has this atmosphere. It could all happen in a single evening, and on all these different places. All these different stories in one long summer evening. "

After the release the album reached position 3 on the Billboard charts and was able to keep more than two years in the top 100. Born To Run made Springsteen in the same week on the cover of the Times ( "The new sensation of the Rock" ) and Newsweek ( " A Rock Star is Born" ). More than six million albums were sold up to 2006, so that the album Springsteen is the second most sold album by Born in the USA.

Quotes

  • Bruce Springsteen: " try to escape all characters from Born To Run. Thunder Road. An attempt to free himself. Tenth Avenue Freeze -Out, Night to escape attempt. Backstreets, Someone escapes, another remains. Born To Run, I try to escape. All of these songs have this tension: Someone is trying to find a new place. That was what Born To Run was based. "
  • Jon Landau: "I have the future of rock ' n ' roll seen and her name is Bruce Springsteen. He gave me the feeling of listening to music for the first time. "
  • Bruce Springsteen: " I wanted to write mini- epics. "
  • Roy Bittan: "I think people responded to the romance of the plate and on their innocence. I think everyone was a part of his hopes and dreams in it again. "
  • Wolfgang Niedecken (BAP ): "When I heard the album [' Born to Run '], I knew that the problem of how to explain to an extraterrestrial rock ' n ' roll, his sound and his subjects, was finally solved. A lanky young man had to be in a small house in West Long Branch, New Jersey, dreamed of the best, and he had done it. When he crawled back after months of seclusion from the studio into the light and got into the tour bus, he and his band were the greatest rock 'n ' roll record of all time included " ( for 'ne moment: autobiography, Hamburg: Hoffmann und Campe, 2nd edition, 2011, p 343).

Trivia

  • The riff of the song Born to Run came from Steve Van Zandt. He also had the idea for the wind in Tenth Avenue Freeze -Out.
  • VH1 chose Born to Run at number 27 of the best albums of all time, the Rolling Stone chose it to number 18 of the 500 best albums of all time.
  • In 2003, the album Born to Run was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Album cover

The cover of Born To Run is one of the most famous ever. It was designed by Eric Meola, who shot a total of 900 pictures in a three-hour session. These images were later under the title "Born To Run: The Unseen Photos" published. It shows Bruce Springsteen with an electric guitar ( a cross between a Fender Telecaster and Fender Esquire ), leaning against Clarence Clemons. Springsteen's pose was supposedly spontaneous.

The fact that Springsteen and Clemons were seen together on the cover should imply that it was on this board about friendship. The cover was often satirized. There are, for example, a cover of Cheap Trick, which picks up this motif; just a picture from Sesame Street, in which Bert leans in a similar pose to the Cookie Monster.
