Dommartin (Doubs)

Dommartin is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Dommartin is on 806 m above sea level, about five kilometers northwest of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The scattered village extends in the Jura, in the eastern part of the broad plateaux of Arlier ( Pontarlier - Frasnian ), on Drugeon, south of the hill of the Côte du Fol

The area of ​​6.39 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southeastern part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Arlier, the average is 810 m and is mostly covered by meadows. Previously, the Drugeon meandered through this plane; today it is channeled and drains the area northeast to Doubs. To the east of the municipality floor extends to the outskirts of Pontarlier. To the north, the municipality's area extends over a steep slope on the broad crest of the Côte du Fol, which is forested almost continuously. Here the highest elevation of Dommartin is achieved with 944 m.

At Dommartin the settlement La Côte part (850 m) on the slopes of the Côte du Fol on the edge of the plain of Arlier. Neighboring communities of Dommartin are Sombacour and Goux -les- Usiers in the north, Vuillecin, Doubs and Pontarlier in the east and Houtaud the south and west.

History

The place name derives from the Latin name Martinus Domnus ( St. Martin ). In the Middle Ages Dommartin formed its own little rule. Due to a severe plague epidemic in 1636 decimated the population. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Today Dommartin is a member of the 10 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Larmont.

Attractions

The village church Saint -Martin was built in the 17th century in the Gothic Flamboyant style. The choir is flanked by two side chapels; the ship was restored in the 18th century. In-room amenities include two notable statues from the 16th century. Also from the mid-17th century, the chapel dates back Niai - Nion at the foot of the Côte du Fol

Population

With 632 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Dommartin is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1886 258 persons were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1960s again. Since then, the population has nearly tripled. Outside the old town center, numerous new single-family homes have been created.

Economy and infrastructure

Dommartin was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and livestock village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business establishments, especially shops of retail. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who principally engaged in the larger towns in the area, in Pontarlier their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road D72, which leads from Pontarlier to Salins- les- Bains. Further road links exist with Vuillecin and Doubs.
