Chaffois

Chaffois is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chaffois is located on 841 m above sea level, about seven kilometers west of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the northern edge of the broad plateaux of Arlier ( Pontarlier - Frasnian ), at the foot of the hill Côte du Fol, north of Drugeon.

The area of ​​16.25 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The whole area is occupied by the plateau of Arlier, which is an average of 840 meters. It is mostly covered by meadows, but it shows in the Northwest and some forest areas and in the area of ​​Drugeon various bogs, where peat was cut earlier. The southern boundary runs along the Drugeon, the once meandered through the bog surface, but today is channeled and the area drained to the northeast along the Doubs. The entire northern part of the municipality has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. On the plateau northwest of Chaffois the Trou de Jardelle is. History

Several findings, including several tumuli, point out that the municipality of Chaffois was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Excavations objects from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age have been unearthed. Today Chaffois is a member of the 10 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Larmont.

Demographics

With 902 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Chaffois one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1911 503 persons were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.

Attractions

The parish church of Notre- Dame de l' Assomption was already built in 1217. From the period after the First World War, the chapel is on the hill near the village.

Economy and infrastructure

Chaffois was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and livestock village.
