Bannans

Bannans is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Bannans is located at 815 m above sea level, about nine miles west of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in the midst of the broad plateaux of Arlier ( Pontarlier - Frasnian ), north of the Drugeon and Montagne du Laveron.

The area of ​​11.56 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The whole area is occupied by the plateau of Arlier, which is on average 830 m. It is mostly covered by meadows, but it shows in the Northwest and some forest areas and in the area of ​​Drugeon various bogs, where peat was cut earlier. The area is drained by the Drugeon that once meandered through the bog surface and is channeled today, northeast to Doubs. A small proportion of the municipal area is located south of the river. The entire northern part of the municipality has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. With 873 m north of the town reached on the plateau, the highest point of Bannans.

History

Various finds, among other things, a tumulus, point out that the municipality of Bannans in prehistoric times and during the Gallo- Roman period has been settled. The first mention in writing Bannans around the year 1000 in a document of the monastery Romainmôtier in the Swiss canton of Vaud. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the first rule of La Rivière, which belonged to the lords of Chalon. Later it formed its own little rule. Together with the Franche -Comté Bannans came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Since 2003 Bannans is a member of the comprehensive 10 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Plateau de Frasnian et du Val du Drugeon.

Attractions

The three-nave parish church of Saint -André was built in 1725 in the classical style. The 1743 newly built castle served since 1759 as the Mairie ( Municipal House ) and school, but was completely destroyed by fire in 1985 and then rebuilt as a modern construction. In the center a few farmhouses are obtained in the characteristic style of the Haut-Doubs from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Population

With 314 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Bannans one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century ( in 1896 430 people were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Bannans was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and livestock village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including a sawmill. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D471 which leads from Pontarlier to Champagnole. Further road links exist with La Riviere Drugeon and Sainte-Colombe.
