History

The day belongs to Dufftown Mortlach is one of the earliest Christian settlements in Scotland. Today's located on the outskirts Mortlach Church dates from the 6th century and is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland. On the adjacent cemetery there is also a Pictish cross. This points to a settlement in the early Middle Ages. End of the 12th century was Balvenie Castle (now also on the outskirts of Dufftown lying) built and named the settlement at his feet accordingly Balvenie.

Then in 1817 founded James Duff, 4th Earl of Fife, at this point the town Dufftown as housing for returning soldiers and named it after himself

Whiskey

But this saying was in consequence only a few years validity: Parkmore was closed again in 1931; 1974 but was built as a further distillery Pittyvaich. The closure of Convalmore in 1985; In 1990 Kininvie was built. Pittyvaich overtook the closure in 1993 and demolition in 2002. Thus the saying even today can still apply, either Convalmore that is at least still used as a whiskey warehouse, or a few miles distant distillery Allt -A- Bhainne is ( built in 1975 ) counted as the seventh distillery Dufftowns.

Nevertheless, Dufftown is considered whiskey capital of Speyside, Scotland or even the whole world. And so it is in the small village not only whiskey distilleries, but a special whiskey business, a small whiskey museum, in the spring of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival and in the fall the Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival.

The Clock Tower is a bell that " McPherson killed " should have. McPherson was a Robin Hood -like person who was hanged in MacDuff on the Banffshire Coast, when the sheriff rang the bell at that time located there. Apparently he wanted to speed with the ( premature ) ringing of the bell the execution because he knew that a messenger was traveling with the pardon.
