Listen to Edwin van der Sar? / I ( born October 29, 1970 in Voorhout ) is a former Dutch football player. He played on the position of the goalkeeper and was most recently the English first division club Manchester United. It is equipped with 130 inserts capped player of the Dutch national team.

Club career

He began his career at Foreholte, a club in Voorhout. Then he moved to VV Noordwijk, where he was discovered by Ajax Amsterdam.

Ajax Amsterdam

With Ajax Amsterdam Edwin van der Sar was during the 1992/93 season successor of Stanley Menzo as a goalkeeper. He won the club to the Eredivisie in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1998, the KNVB Cup in 1993, 1998 and 1999, the UEFA Champions League in 1995, the Intercontinental Cup in 1995 and the European Supercup in 1995. 1996 he achieved with his team again the final of the Champions League. However, one had to admit defeat to Juventus on penalties 2:4. During the season 1997/98 van der Sar scored his only goal in professional football. In the game at De Graafschap Doetinchem he steered a penalty at a gateway to the 8-1 win. It was the third penalty of Ajax to 8-0 intermediate level; previously had already Jari Litmanen and Ronald de Boer transformed their penalty kicks.

Juventus

In 1999, van der Sar to Italian giants Juventus. He remained there but without title and was not very popular with the fans because of some gross goalkeeper error. After two seasons, he was sold again, his successor in goal for Juve was Gianluigi Buffon. To date, van der Sar is the only non-Italian goalkeeper in the history of Juventus.

Fulham

In 2001 he moved for 10 million euros for Fulham FC, with whom he the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup won.

Manchester United

2005 van der Sar moved to Manchester United. With the team he won the League Cup (2006), the champion (2007, 2008, 2009 ) and the Champions League (2008). This van der Sar kept in the final against Chelsea the decisive penalty from Nicolas Anelka. Following further winning the Champions League, after the victory of 1995 with Ajax Amsterdam, van der Sar, the player with the largest time interval between two title wins in the Champions League. During the 2008/ 09 season was van der Sar in the Premier League 1311 minutes without conceding a goal, beating the previous record by Steve Death. Only Peter Lovenkrands of Newcastle United overcame van der Sar 28 on matchday. Thus, the goalkeeper missed the European record by Dany Verlinden by 79 minutes. He announced to end his career at the end of the 2010/11 season at Manchester United. On 28 May 2011, he was defeated in his last professional game in the Champions League final against Barcelona 3-1. The final was also his 100th game in European competition. At the same time 40 years and 7 months old van der Sar thus became the oldest player ever stood in a Champions League final.

National

Since 1994, van der Sar was the national squad in the Netherlands. With the Football World Cup 1994 he was substitute by Ed de Goey. He made his debut until June 7, 1995 against Belarus. Since then, he was goalkeeper of the national team.

Prior to the 2006 World Cup in Germany managed van der Sar, in ten competitive games ( total of 1013 minutes ) to allow a clean sheet. This is until now European record. Since June 25, 2006 van der Sar is the sole Dutch capped player.

After being eliminated against Russia at Euro 2008 he finished after 128 international appearances in his career Oranje. However, he was reactivated due to the injury- related losses of Maarten Stekelenburg and Henk Timmer, for the World Cup qualifiers against Iceland and Norway in October 2008. Other international appearances there was no more after that.

After the active career

On November 19, 2012, the AFC Ajax announced that van der Sar will serve from November 26, 2012 at the Board of Amsterdam as Marketing Director.

Edwin van der Sar is married and father of two children.
