History

Ermershausen was first mentioned in 1049 as Ermannshusen. In the Thirty Years' War, the town was destroyed several times. The Lords of Hutten were resident from 1475 until its extinction in 1783 in Birkenfeld, in whose possession were both Ermershausen and Birkenfeld. 1814 fell Ermershausen to Bavaria. Created in 1818 the municipality Ermershausen. In 1830 was in Ermershausen a Jewish cemetery.

The town achieved some notoriety in 1978. The inhabitants resisted vehemently the integration into the community Maroldsweisach by the municipal reform. This culminated in the occupation of the city hall and the erection of barricades by citizens of Ermershausen with the purpose to prevent the relocation of the municipal administration for Maroldsweisach. The village was finally stormed by several hundreds of riot police and evacuated the town hall. The amalgamation was completed on 1 May 1978. Since 1 January 1994, however Ermershausen is again independently and thus one of the smallest independent municipalities in Bavaria.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1973, the market Birkenfeld and the community Dippach were incorporated. Both districts were reclassified on May 1, 1978 on the occasion of the amalgamation of Ermershausen after Maroldsweisach. As Ermershausen became independent again on 1 January 1994, Birkenfeld and Dippach remained with Maroldsweisach.
