Figure skating at the 1948 Winter Olympics

The V. 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz three competitions were held in figure skating. Venues were the Olympic ice stadium Badrutts Park and the Kulm - Eisrink for the duty cycles of men and women. The ice rinks had the standardized size of 60 × 30 m.

The competition was attended by 16 skaters from 10 countries. Had to be shown a duty of five characters and a five- minute-long freestyle. The required duty figures were: turn, turn counter, double three - paragraph, loop section, against three - paragraph. ( See also: Figure skating elements )

As favorites of the reigning world champion Hans Gerschwiler from Switzerland and the reigning European champions Richard button from the United States were considered. Button surprisingly led already in the compulsory and running in almost all figures. In the freestyle showed his superior jumping technique. He jumped first runner a double Axel and also showed elements that are otherwise known only from floor exercises. For example, was a Grätschsprung with 1.5 m height of his demonstration. Ladies

It took 25 skaters from 10 countries participated in this competition. The duty of these five figures had to show, followed by a four-minute freestyle. There were the same as mandatory elements required in the men.

The Canadian Barbara Ann Scott was considered a clear favorite among women. She received the highest score in both the duty as well as in the freestyle and was convincingly Olympic champion. Eva Pawlik of Austria won the silver medal and Jeannette Altwegg, daughter of a Swiss father, won bronze for Great Britain. After compulsory Altwegg was still ahead Pawlik in second place.

Competition in pair skating, which was attended by 15 couples from 11 countries, consisted of a five minute freestyle. The performances were judged by eleven adjudicators.

The Belgians Micheline Lannoy and Pierre Baugniet won the first and only Olympic gold medal in figure skating for their country, by referring the Hungary Andrea Kékesy and Ede Király and the Canadian Suzanne Morrow and Wallace Diestel Meyer to the places.
