In contrast to the previous Olympic Games, there was no clear favorite in the men's competition. After the Second World War all Olympic champions had come from the United States in the men's competition. By plane crash in 1961, in which an entire generation of U.S. figure skater was wiped out, the U.S. could not continue their dominance. The world champions of the past two years, Canadians Donald Jackson and Donald McPherson had already ended her career. The reigning vice-champion Alain Calmat from France was thus slightly favored. After compulsory Manfred Schnelldorfer led before the duty specialist Karol Divín. Alain Calmat was in third place. Manfred Schnelldorfer also won the freestyle and became the Olympic champion, the first and to date only German in the men's competition. Alain Calmat won the silver medal with the fifth- best freestyle. Karol Divín fell through the ninth best freestyle back to fourth place overall and so the American Scott Allen won the bronze medal. Emmerich Danzer finished fifth.
