Floyd Spence

Floyd Davidson Spence ( born April 9, 1928 in Columbia, South Carolina; † August 16, 2001 in Jackson, Mississippi ) was an American politician. Between 1971 and 2001 he represented the state of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Floyd Spence attended Lexington High School in South Carolina and then studied until 1956 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Between 1947 and 1988 he was a member of the reserve of the U.S. Navy. In 1956, Spence was admitted to the bar. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1956 and 1962 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from South Carolina. 1962, he joined the Republican Party. As their candidate, he applied the same year unsuccessfully for a seat in Congress. He lost narrowly to Albert William Watson.

From 1966 to 1970 Spence belong to the Senate of South Carolina. There he led the faction of the Republican senators. He was a delegate to many local Republican party conferences in his state. Between 1964 and 1984 he was a delegate to all Republican National Conventions.

1970 Spence was in the second constituency of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on January 3, 1971, to succeed Albert Watson. After 15 Re-elections he could remain until his death on 16 August 2001 at the Congress. From 1995 to 1999 he was Chairman of the Committee on National Security and from 1999 to 2001, he headed the Armed Services Committee. During his time in Congress, among other things ended the Vietnam War. During this time the Watergate scandal fell. In addition, the 26th and the 27th Amendment to the Constitution were adopted.

Floyd Spence died of a brain surgery.
