Shortly after independence Gambia intended the young government to solve all of the UK and Gambia to convert it into a presidential republic, which has an elected president as head of state instead of the British Queen. For this constitutional amendment, a referendum was necessary that the government had carried out in November.

Of the approximately 154 626 previously registered voters 93 484 valid votes were cast, thus the level of voter turnout was 60.46 percent. 65.85 percent of the voters in favor of the new constitution, which but a two-thirds majority, ie 66.67 per cent, was narrowly missed.

Nevertheless, Gambia gave the vote of respect because they expired organizationally well. A second referendum was conducted four and a half years later.
