The referendum in Gambia 1970 ( English 1970 Plebiscite ) took place on 24 April 1970. According to one estimate Gambia in 1970 a population of 484 580 inhabitants had.

Shortly after independence in 1965, the young intended Gambia government to solve all of the UK and Gambia to convert it into a presidential republic, should have instead the Queen an elected president as head of state. For this constitutional amendment, a referendum was necessary that the government had carried out in a first referendum in 1965. However, this narrowly failed, so in 1970 the question was repeated.

Of the estimated 135,000 previously registered voters 120 606 valid votes were cast, thus the level of voter turnout was 89.34 percent. 70.45 percent of the voters in favor of the new constitution, which this time a two-thirds majority was reached and the constitution could be changed.
