Geographical Location

The community Geiersthal lies in the Danube- forest in the heart of the Bavarian Forest above the valley of the Black Rain about 10 km southeast of Viechtach, 27 km north of Deggendorf, 18 km north- west of the county town of rain and 11 km from ground corn.

History

The first recorded mention of the town dates from the year 1209. Parish in the directory of the diocese of Regensburg in the year 1286 the parish Geiersthal is mentioned. The mother parish counted in 1300 including Geiersthal 13 places, which rose to the mid-18th century to 50 villages.

Geiersthal belonged to Rentamt Straubing and the district court Viechtach of the Electorate of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in the Kingdom of Bavaria was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community.

From Geiersthal the jurist Friedrich Freiherr von Wulffen dates (1790 - 1858). He was 1843-1846 President of the Government of Lower Bavaria and was a 1848/49 as a member of the right center of the Frankfurt National Assembly. From 1855 he was president of the Supreme Court in Bavaria, the Upper Appellation Court in Munich.

Since 1886, negotiations took place to move the parish seat of vultures Thal to Teisnach, that was in 1881 become the most important place of the parish since the founding of the paper mill Teisnach. The remaining apse was converted into a cemetery chapel. In 1903, the relocation of the parish office to Teisnach was complete.
