Gellin

Gellin is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Gellin is at 923 meters above sea level, about 21 kilometers southwest of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village street lines extending in the Jura, in the longitudinal recess of the Val de Mouthe, on the northern edge of the valley of the Doubs north of Risoux, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​4.87 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the approximately two -mile-wide longitudinal recess of the Val de Mouthe that forms a syncline in geological- tectonic terms. The Doubs meanders through a wide, partly vermoorte Talniederung and drains the area to the northeast. On its northern side the valley floor from the heights of the Bois de la Pila ( to 1066 meters) and Les Essarts (1010 meters) is flanked. With a narrow strip, the municipality's area extends south into the predominantly forested area of Cret Sapeau on which with 1293 meters, the highest elevation of Gellin is achieved. There are no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

Neighboring communities of Gellin are Remoray - Boujeons and Brey -et -Maison -du -Bois in the north, the east, and Villedieu Les Sarrageois the south and west.

History

The first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Gerlans Gellin could go back to the Germanic personal name Gisilo. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the rule Mouthe. Together with the Franche -Comté it came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Today Gellin is a member of the comprehensive 13 villages municipal association Communauté de communes des Hauts du Doubs.

Attractions

The village church of Notre-Dame was built in 1779 in the classical style and restored in 1843.

Population

With 216 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Gellin is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 222 people were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Gellin was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, as well as by the forestry village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares of the secondary road D437, which runs from Saint -Laurent -en- Grandvaux to Pontarlier. Further road links exist with Jougne, Villedieu Les and Maison -du -Bois.
