Sarrageois

Sarrageois is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sarrageois is located at 950 meters above sea level, about 23 km southwest of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village street lines extending in the Jura, a slight increase on the northern flank of the longitudinal recess of the Val de Mouthe, above the valley of the Doubs north of Risoux, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​13.22 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the approximately two -mile-wide longitudinal recess of the Val de Mouthe that forms a syncline in geological- tectonic terms. The Doubs meanders through a wide Talniederung and drains the area to the northeast. On its north-west side of the valley floor of the wooded height of the Bois de la Pila ( 1078 m) is flanked. With a narrow strip, the municipality's area extends south into the partly forested, partly covered with pasture area of Cret Sapeau ( 1292 m) and Cret Gellin, on with 1314 m the highest peak of Sarrageois is achieved. There are no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. In the far south are the heights of Petit Risoux.

Neighboring communities of Sarrageois are Mouthe and Rondefontaine in the West, Remoray - Boujeons in the north, Gellin and Les Villedieu in the East as well as the Swiss town of Le Lieu in the south.

History

Is first mentioned Sarrageois in 1296 under the name Charagey. Since the Middle Ages it belonged to the rule Mouthe. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Today Sarrageois is a member of the comprehensive 13 villages municipal association Communauté de communes des Hauts du Doubs.

Attractions

The village church of Sarrageois was built in 1682 and later enlarged. In the center some characteristic farmhouses in the traditional style of the high Jura are obtained.

Population

With 161 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Sarrageois is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1881 170 people were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1990s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Sarrageois was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, as well as by the forestry village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including a wood processing company. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares near the secondary road D437, which runs from Saint -Laurent -en- Grandvaux to Pontarlier.
