General Güemes Department, Salta

The Department of General Güemes is located in the center of the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the province of Jujuy, to the east by the department of Anta, on the south by the Departamento Metán and to the west by the departments Capital and La Caldera.

The capital of the department is the General Güemes same name.

Climate

The mean annual temperature is 17 degrees Celsius. The annual precipitation is 500-1100 mm.

Economy

Agriculture brings in irrigation farming produce stone fruits, olives, peppers, strawberries, nuts, sugar cane and table grapes. In dry growing beans, grains and forage crops are produced. In the livestock industry, the cattle is used both for meat production as the dairy industry. In addition, goats and pigs are bred. Forestry is dedicated to the production of eucalyptus, pines, willows and poplars. Great importance to the department have the agro-industrial processing plants ( cold stores, dairies, sugar mills, saw mills, etc. ) and the power plant for generating electrical energy.
