Gerbéviller
Gerbéviller is a commune with 1369 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Luneville and Canton Gerbéviller.
Geography
Gerbéviller located 14 kilometers south of Luneville, 23 kilometers northwest of Rambervillers and about 40 kilometers north of Epinal. The town lies on the river Mortagne, mainly on its left bank. Neighboring communities of Gerbéviller are Haudonville, Moriviller, Remenoville, Seranville, Vallois, Moyen, Fraimbois, Hériménil, Xermaménil and Blainville- sur- l'Eau.
History
Gerbéviller was first mentioned in 1149. At the same time a castle and city walls were built. By the end of the century the place belongs to the appanage of the younger sons of the house Châtenois. 1265 forces Frederick III, Duke of Lorraine the site -. Simultaneously with Luneville and Einville - a Constitution. Later Gerbéviller comes into the possession of the families Know You Châtelet or Tornielle over.
1636, during the siege of Moyen, Gerbéviller is burned. The castle is - like most of the castles in Lorraine and France - destroyed on the orders of Richelieu. The city walls were demolished in 1681, but 1704-1707 rebuilt.
1737 Camille de Lambertye inherited from his uncle Anne- Joseph de Tornielle the barony Gerbéviller, which is collected for a margraviate. Lambertye leaves of Germain Boffrand, inter alia, the the castle of Luneville built, the Château de Gerbéviller build one of the finest stately homes in Lorraine.
End of August 1914 came the advance of the German 6th Army in place Gerbéviller strong resistance. Enraged, the Germans executed then civilian inhabitants and burned the village. The community was then temporarily named " Gerbéviller la Martyrdom ".
