Gertjan Verbeek ( born August 1, 1962 in Deventer ) is a Dutch football coach. Until 1994 he was active as a soccer player, including two years in the top division in the Netherlands.

Career

In youth Verbeek played in Enschede at VV Zuid Eschmarke and in Hengelo at VV ATC '65 and in '12 Achilles.

His professional career began in 1984 at SC Heerenveen, for which he, with a break in the 1986/87 season when he ran aground until his retirement in late 1994 for Heracles Almelo played as a defender. Most of the time he played in the Eerste Divisie, the second highest league, twice he rose with Heerenveen in the Eredivisie: 1990 followed a year later, the direct relegated again in 1993, they managed after the league and Verbeek ended his career after 254 league games for the club.

He then became an assistant coach Foppe de Haan, who remained from 1992 to 2004 first-team coach of SC Heerenveen. 2001 Verbeek became head coach at his former club Heracles Almelo in the second division for the first time. As de Haan 2004 then resigned, Verbeek was brought back to continue its work over the next four seasons. In 2008 he took Feyenoord Rotterdam as successor to Bert van Marwijk, but he could not build on the successes like winning the cup preseason with the team and was re-opened. After another season at Almelo moved Verbeek 2010 AZ Alkmaar. With the North Dutch, he was twice in a row fourth in the championship. In its third year, the club slipped in the table, although further down for the fourth time in the club's history succeeded in the Dutch Cup victory and becoming the first title win in Verbeek's coaching career.

Verbeek is considered as a coach, the low financial resources can form successful teams in clubs. His style is considered to be authoritarian and idiosyncratic, which is why his contract was dissolved in Alkmaar because of internal squabbles and in September 2013, despite sporting successes.

On 21 October 2013, the German Bundesliga club 1.FC Nürnberg officially announced the signing of Gertjan Verbeek as a successor to the recently released Michael Wiesinger. The contract with the club expires on 30 June 2015. It is the first foreign engagement of the Dutchman.

Despite conversion of the game system, it initially did not succeed in bringing about the turnaround in the club. Due partly to unfortunate circumstances and despite good performances of the team succeeded in the first round, not a single victory, which was a negative record in Bundesliga history. Attention was Verbeek, because he no longer shaved while the negative series. Only after the first win under his direction in the opening game of the season, a 4-0 against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, he was still lost in the cabin of his beard.
