GÍ Gøta

GÍ Gøta, full name Gotu Ítróttafelag ( " sports club of Gøta " ), GÍ abbreviated, is a former Faroese football club based in Gøta on the island Eysturoy. In November 2007, the team went on in the merger with LIF Leirvík in Víkingur Gøta.

History

The club was founded on 29 October 1926. 1980, the rise in the first Deild (now Effodeildin ) in which GÍ remained until the merger in 2007. Back in 1983 could double in league and cup be achieved in both competitions then followed by five more for each additional item. The home games were played in Sarpugerði Stadium, which holds 3,000 spectators.

Women's Soccer

The women's team played as a founding member of GÍ total of 13 times in the first Deild, In 1986 there with the runner-up title the best placement. After two third places followed the 1989 crash on the penultimate place, a year later GÍ rose without a win in the second division from 1993 and returned back for just one season. Only in 2002 was followed by the team the repeated return and could then hold in mid-table. In 2004, the club in the Championship along with B68 Toftir in a lottery syndicate part, which was disbanded after the season. 2007 came GÍ in the Cup the most success with the participation in the final, which they lost 0-3 against KÍ Klaksvík. Due to the merger with LIF Leirvík 2008 Víkingur Gøta took the place of GÍ in the first division.
