Glenkinchie distillery

Glenkinchie is a whiskey distillery in Pencaitland, East Lothian, Scotland. The distillery is part of the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers ), the whiskey is marketed as part of the Classic Malts series of operations. The distillery buildings are partially sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

The distillery was founded under the name of Milton in 1825 by the brothers George and John Rate and in 1837 renamed Glenkinchie. 1853, the rate brothers went bankrupt and until 1881 no more whiskey was produced. In 1914 the distillery to Scottish Malt Distillers ( SMD). Between 1917 and 1920 the distillery was, like many others, closed. 1968 Tennenmälzerei (Floor Maltings ) was closed in 1969 and converted into a whiskey museum. In 1987, the distillery at United Distillers & Vintners ( UDV ) and ultimately to Diageo. Today it is one of the last distilleries in operation in the Lowlands.

Production

The water belonging to the region Lowlands distillery dates back to the Lammermuir Springs. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (8.5 t ), six fermentation tanks (wash backs) ( together 258,000 l) of larch and pine wood, a wash still ( 30 963 L) and a spirit still ( 20,998 l), the are heated by steam.

Products

  • The 10 year old Glenkinchie is a relatively typical Lowland whiskey with a fresh and light character.
  • The 12 year old Glenkinchie sparked in August 2007 from the 10-year variation.
  • The Distiller 's Edition has been in an Amontillado sherry cask -ripened.
  • The Cask Strength of Glenkinchie is only available in the distillery. The current bottling has 59.3 % vol. She is 12 years matured normally and then ripened at least six years in Amontillado sherry casks.

Visits

Glenkinchie has a visitor center and can be visited. Among other things, there is a large model, where the individual steps of the whiskey production are explained.
