Classic Malts of Scotland

The Classic Malts are thirteen ( originally six) Scottish single malt whiskeys from the spirits group Diageo program (formerly United Distillers ), which are marketed together. They include representatives of the whiskey regions Lowlands, Highlands, Speyside and Islay, but not Campbeltown, also the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, Talisker. The introduction of the series in 1987 is related to the renaissance of Scottish single malt whiskeys at Glenfiddich began in 1963. After the whiskey connoisseur Walter Schobert is the merit of " the resurrection of the Scotch Malt Whisky not high enough to assess, series" is to have for the first time demonstrates the value of the versatility of the single malt and the importance of regional origin.

Originally raised the series claim to represent with six bottlings the six "classic" Whisky Regions of Scotland: Talisker on Skye, Dalwhinnie for the Highlands, Oban for the West Highlands, Glenkinchie for the Lowlands, Lagavulin Islay and Cragganmore for Speyside. This classification Scotland certainly does not enjoy general recognition and in any case does not correspond to the regions of the trade association Scotch Whisky Association.

The end of 2005 named Diageo to the series in Classic Malts Selection and added bottlings of Caol Ila distillery, Clynelish, Glen Elgin, Knockando and Royal Lochnagar. Since 2007, a 12 -year-old Glenkinchie replaced the part sent by then the series 10 -year-old; since also been added bottlings of Cardhu and Dufftown. In addition to the standard bottlings a Distillers Edition of the same whiskey is offered, which differ, however, by a post-storage ( Finishing) in special barrels from the actual Classic Malts.
