History

The roots of Güssing go back on a suburbium, which arose in the shadow of the castle Güssing and lay down with a lenticular Anger to the castle rock. 1427 and 1459 it was called civitas civitas et suburbium.

Since the 16th century Güssing was a free city with full municipal law. In 1619, she was surrounded by fortifications and had four districts: Suburban ( Upper Austria ), Lower Town (location of the castle Draskovic ) inner city ( monastery church and the town hall ) and Hochstadt.

1540 was the magnate Franz Batthyány from Bohemian- Hungarian King and later Emperor Ferdinand I of Güssing permission for the development of iron ore mines, and in 1549 Ferdinand gave him beyond the right to hold markets in Güssing. In the city takes place every first Monday of the month is a market.

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, the Hungarian name Németújvár had ( German: Neuburg ) due to the Magyarization the government in Budapest are used.

After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

1973 Güssing became a town.

Güssing used to have a rail connection. The station building was built in 1899. Today almost nothing more reminiscent of the railway line between Güssing and Körmend who had served mainly the transport of timber. After the Second World War, the maintenance of railway operations seemed pointless because the traffic was directed only to Hungary and the "iron curtain " now the railway line separated. The rail traffic was stopped, the track body rotted. Today, the new federal road B 56 leads between Güssing and Strem especially on the terrain of the former railway track along. The station building in Güssing has been renovated and is still standing. Güssing heard next Oberpullendorf, Oberwart, Zwettl and Waidhofen an der Thaya to the five district capitals of Austria without access to public passenger transport.

Under Mayor Peter Vadasz, the city developed in the early 1990s, an energy concept for independent and sustainable energy.

As a measure for economic development was established with funding of the EU 1996, the European Centre for Renewable Energy Güssing (EEE ). For jobs were to be created in the region and the outflow of purchasing power are constrained by energy imports. Using wood gasification could power and heat to the value of 20 million euro itself are produced in recent years. 2005 Güssing already generated much more heat ( 57.5 GWh ) and electricity (14 GWh) from renewable raw materials needed as the city itself.

The power plant with wood gasification in Güssing also includes a pilot plant that produces a diesel -like biofuel by Fischer- Tropsch synthesis from the product gas.
