Hobart B. Bigelow

Hobart Baldwin Bigelow ( born May 16, 1834 in North Haven, Connecticut, † October 12, 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut ) was an American politician and governor of the U.S. state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early years and political rise

Hobart Bigelow attended the South Egremont Academy in Massachusetts, but left school early to begin training as a mechanic. He became a successful businessman and a leading manufacturer of heaters and heavy equipment. In 1861 he bought the Bigelow Manufacturing Company, which later under the name HB Bigelow & Co. conducted its businesses. Bigelow was his life, the President of the Company. He began his political career as an alderman of New Haven, an office which he held 1863-1876. He was also a member of the 1875 House of Representatives from Connecticut and 1879-1881 mayor of New Haven.

Governor of Connecticut

He was elected on November 2, 1880 Governor of Connecticut and sworn in on January 5, 1881. During his tenure, the Storrs Agricultural School was founded and taxation cropped to life insurance the insurance companies something. Bigelow left at his office January 3, 1883, and retired from public service.

Hobart B. Bigelow died on October 12, 1891 and was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. He was married to Eleanor Lewis. The couple had four children together.
