Houesville

Houesville is a commune with 318 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Sainte- Mère -Église.

Geography

Houesville located 10.7 km south west of Utah Beach between Blosville in the north and Saint -Côme -du -Mont in the southeast 6.4 km northwest of Carentan on the Cotentin Peninsula in the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin on the N13. The Douve flows through the municipal area.

Attractions

The castle of le Vivier was built in the 18th century, in the 19th century pavilions were added. It is privately owned.

The church of Saint -Gilles is dedicated Giles of St. Gilles ( 640-720 ). It belongs to the diocese of Coutances and was built in the 15th century. The western entrance was redesigned in 1791, the vaulted roof was renewed in 1879. In the church there is an altar, tabernacle and altar frontal from the 18th and 19th centuries, as a group historique (historic monument) were classified in 1978 as a monument. At the church, an old Protestant cemetery is from the time of the Wars of Religion ( 1562-1598 ).

By Houesville leads the "path of freedom " ( Voie de la Liberté ), which is characterized by a number of landmarks. It runs from Sainte- Mère- Église on Utah Beach to Bastogne in Belgium and commemorates the liberation of France, Luxembourg and Belgium by the Allied invasion of Normandy at the end of the Second World War.
