Imre Földi

Imre Foldi [ imrɛ Foldi ] ( born May 8, 1938 in Kecskemét ) is a former Hungarian weightlifter.

Origin

As Imre Foldi grew up in Kecskemét, he wanted to become football goalkeeper. His idol was Gyula Grosics, the keeper of the Golden Team. Because of its small size changed Földi for wrestling, gymnastics and weightlifting, and then at age 14 to focus entirely on the weight lifting. Földi moved to Tatabánya and learned the trade of a locksmith.

Career

In weightlifting Földi was first used in 1959 in an international competition. In 1960 he started for the first time in the Olympic Games.

His career lasted then until 1976, during which he was a total of five times in the Olympic Games at the start. Földi was the fourth attempt in 1972 Olympic champion and several times world and European champions. He had a normal weight of about 62 kg at a height of 1.49 m. In order to start because of the better prospects in the bantamweight (up to 56 kg body weight), he had to work off 6 kg before each competition. Until his 38th year, he remained active and competed in 21 major international championships (OS, WM, EM). No other weight lifters reach as many participants. After ending his playing career he became a coach.

International success

From 1964, individual medals at world championships were also awarded at the Olympics and World Cup titles from 1969. It won Imre Foldi additionally 5 World Championship gold medals, 5 World Championship silver medals and two World Cup bronze medals.
