Incorruption is a property that ascribes the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox hagiographic tradition the remains of saints.

General

Imperishable, must be distinguished from artificial mummification and natural physical and biochemical conditions that may cause the conservation of body shape.

Several whole-body relics are presented in apparently unverwestem state of worship. Such incorruption is understood as a supernatural phenomenon. By God's creative power prevents or retards the natural process of decay of the human corpse, he confirms the sanctity of the dead. Biblical background of this view is especially Ps 16,10 EU in the Septuagint version, as it is quoted among others in Acts 2.27 EU: " yet you let your Holy One see corruption. "

However, the phenomenon of natural mummification is also independent of a religious veneration of the dead be observed, examples are the Knights of Kahlbutz and the mummies in the Bremen Bleikeller.

Roman Catholic Church

In the Roman Catholic Church on incorruption is regarded as a divine sign. As a relevant for the canonization miracle does not apply incorruption.

Since the 19th century an attempt is made to distinguish the alleged incorruption with scientific means of natural and artificial mummification. An example of a manmade mummification is the non- vest body of Blessed Pope John XXIII, who was mummified by chemical methods and survived through the air in a three- fold sealed coffin today.

Some of the incorruptible bodies that are located in reliquaries, face and hands are covered with wax replicas, such as St. Bernadette.

Orthodox Church

Also in the Orthodox churches whose incorruptibility is part of the worship in a significant number of saints. Various legends tell of the miraculous discovery of such holy body.
