Joe Borg

Joseph Borġ [ dʒoʊzɪf bɔɹtʃ ] ( called Joe Borġ ) ( born March 19, 1952, Malta) is a Maltese politician. He is a member of the Nationalist Party and was the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs.

Career in Malta

Joseph Borġ in 1975 graduated from the University of Malta as a doctor of law degree. From 1976 to 1989 he worked in his profession, partly at the university, partly in the private sector.

1989 to 1995 he worked in the Centre for European Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the economy ministry and the Central Bank of Malta. In 1995 he was finally elected to the House of Representatives of Malta, where he sat until 2004. He was, among others, from 1996 to 1998 Shadow Minister for Industry with responsibilities for the EU. From 1998 to 1999 he was Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament. After that, he was until 2004 Foreign Minister of his country.

Career in the EU

On 1 May 2004 he was European Commissioner with the EU accession of Malta. First he was with Poul Nielson European Commissioner for Development, November 2004 to February 2010 he was fishing and sea Commissioner. His cabinet chief was the German Michael Köhler.

Private

Joseph Borġ is married and has two children.
