John Henry Kinkead

John Henry Kinkead ( born December 10, 1826 in Smithfield, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; † August 15, 1904 in Carson City, Nevada ) was an American politician ( Republican).

Career

John Henry Kinkead attended the Community School and later the Lancaster High School in his home. After that, he was successful as a merchant, who was known to Missouri to Utah and California, and especially in Nevada.

Kinkeads first public office was that of Minister of Finance of the Nevada Territory, a position which he held 1862-1864. He was also a delegate to the 1863 state constitutional convention. Kinkead won the Republican primary for governor of Nevada in 1878 and was then elected the governor. During his tenure, he promoted the expansion of the mining industry and the improvement of roads. The VCT Railroad between Virginia City and Carson City was built between 1869 and 1870, and completed between Carson City and Reno, 1872. Once he had decided not to stand for re-election, Kinkead was nominated and elected as the first territorial governor of the District of Alaska, an office which he held 1884-1885.

John H. Kinkead was married to Elizabeth case, and they adopted a child. He died in August 1904 in Carson City and was buried in the local Lone Mountain Cemetery.
