John McCuish

John Berridge McCuish ( born June 22, 1906 in Leadville, Colorado, † March 12, 1962 in Newton, Kansas ) was an American politician. He officiated in 1957 for a few days as the 34th Governor of the state of Kansas.

Early years and political career

McCuish attended the Kemper Military School in Missouri and Washburn University, where he graduated in 1925. He decided to create a journalistic career. Over time he became the owner and editor of several newspapers including the " Harvey County News", which he had for 25 years in his possession. During the Second World War he served in the U.S. Army and was then at the American Red Cross, based in Germany.

McCuish was a member of the Republican Party. Both 1936 and 1948 he attended the Republican National Convention as a delegate. In 1948 he was treasurer of the Republicans in Kansas. Between 1939 and 1943 he was Chairman of the State Tax Committee. In 1954 he was elected Vice- Governor (Lieutenant Governor ) of Kansas. He was Deputy Governor Fred Hall.

Gubernatorial election, 1956

In the Republican primary for the gubernatorial election of 1956 Governor Fred Hall by Warren Shaw was beaten. However, this lost the actual election this year to Democrat George Docking. At this time, the Chief Justice of Kansas, Bill Smith, seriously ill and thought about resigning after. Smith was a supporter and friend of Governor Hall and was worried that the newly elected governor docking could appoint a Democrat to the new Chief Justice after his resignation. Well developed Governor Hall and his deputy McCuish a plan for how you could prevent this. Following the plan joined Smith on December 31, 1956 back by the Office of the Chief Justice. He was followed on January 3, 1957 Governor Hall with his resignation, which occurred just eleven days before the expiration of his term of office. According to the constitution in 1957 McCuish now governor of Kansas for the remaining eleven days until the 14th of January. Its first and only official act was the appointment of his predecessor Hall as the new Chief Justice. This procedure was legally and politically probably correct, but it had a negative connotation. Many critics condemned this practice as immoral and unethical.

Further CV

After the end of his brief tenure McCuish again devoted his newspapers. He died after a stroke in 1962 and was buried in Newton, Kansas.
