Kel Carruthers

Kelvin " Kel " Carruthers ( born January 3, 1938 in Sydney, Australia ) is a retired Australian motorcycle racer. He denied 1966-1970 a total of 54 races in the motorcycle world championship in 1969 and won the title in the 250 cc class.

Career

Carruthers was the son of a motorcycle dealer's early contact with the art of motorcycles and got into racing. He won the early 1960s the Australian Championships in classes up to 125 cc, 250 cc, 350 cc and 500 cc. According to national success, he went to Europe to compete in the Motorcycle World Championship. In 1966, he went there on Aermacchi in the 350 cc class his first race. In 1969 he moved with Benelli in 250cc class, won his first race and won the title.

After the 1970 season, he accepted an offer from Yamaha for racing in the United States, where he also the young Kenny Roberts sr. promoted. 1973 Carruthers was team manager of the U.S. Yamaha racing team and won with Roberts as a driver in 1973 and 1974, the Grand National Championship. After the change in the Motorcycle World Championship Carruthers Roberts led as a technician and consultant in the late 1970s to three consecutive World Championships. Eddie Lawson also brought under the management of Carruthers a title. By 1995, Carruthers worked for several grand prix teams, then switched to jet ski race and led from 1998 Yamaha Motocross Team.

Carruthers was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and in 1999 into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1985.
