The motorcycle world championship 1970 season was the 22nd in the history of the FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.

In the classes to 500 cc to 125 cc and eleven were discharged eight races in the classes up to 350 cc and 50 cc of ten, in the class up to 250 cc twelve and at the sidecars.

Scoring

  • The number gewerteter runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then added with one. For example, so went six races at four in the championship standings.
  • If an odd number of races held, the number of runs was added to one and then halved. Thus, for example went at seven race four in the standings.

Rule Changes

For the 1970 season the following changes to the technical regulations were approved by the FIM:

  • The maximum number of cylinders for the 125 - and 250 - cc class of four limited to two, which quickly led to the disappearance of four-strokes from these classes
  • For all classes the transmission was limited to a maximum of six courses

Mortality

  • In the World Cup race of the 1970 season a total of seven drivers were killed. The most prominent victim was the Spaniard Santiago Herrero, who crashed while leading the championship of the 250 - cc class in the Lightweight TT races ( 250 cc class) on 8 June 1970 and two days later died of his injuries.
