The motorcycle world championship 1979 season was the 31st in the history of FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.
In the classes to 500 cc and 250 cc were twelve in the class up to 350 cc eleven in the class up to 125 cc 13 in the class up to 50 cc and in the sidecars category B2A seven and at the sidecars the B2B category six races held.
