The World Motorcycle Championship 1976 was the 28th in the history of the FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.
In the classes to 500 cc and 350 cc was ten, played seven races in the class up to 250 cc eleven, in classes of up to 125 cc and 50 cc of nine and at the sidecars

- In the 500 cc class was the first time in the history of the Motorcycle World Championship no factory teams at the start.
- The Grand Prix of Germany was originally supposed to be like last in 1968, fought on the South Loop. Since the necessary work on improvements to the route were not carried out, the race was again held on the applicable dangerous Nordschleife, which was in contrast to the southern loop, however 1970/71 rebuilt. The foreign motorcycle World Championship riders had in 1974 the Nordschleife Grand Prix boycotted due to adjustment of track safety on the Eifel race - car races, and four weeks before the Austrian Niki Lauda was serious accident in the Formula 1 GP.
- Giacomo Agostini won at the Nürburgring- Nordschleife, the place of his first Grand Prix victory ( although at that time on the southern loop ), in the 500 cc class his 122nd and final victory in the Motorcycle World Championship. This brand is unmatched today. Only Valentino Rossi made it next to Agostini the magical limit of 100 Grand Prix victories to break and is currently holding at 106 victories. The victory also represents represents the last of a four-stroke engine in 2002 until discharged 500 cc class
Mortality
- When Nations Grand Prix at the first time in the calendar standing Mugello circuit, the two local pilots Paolo Tordi and Otello Buscherini died. Tordi crashed in the 350 cc race, Buscherini in 250 cc race, both died on the way to hospital.
- The Isle of Man TT called this year also two fatalities. Walter Wörner, passenger of Siegfried Maier in the sidecar class and the Australian Les Kenny, in the race of the Lightweight TT, were killed.
