The World Motorcycle Championship season in 1961 was the 13th in the history of the FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.
³ In the class up to 500 cm were ten discharged six races in the class up to 350 cc seven, in the classes up to 250 cc and 125 cc up to eleven and in the sidecars.
Scoring
- The number gewerteter runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then added with one. With six races so four were included in the championship standings.
- If an odd number of races held, the number of runs was added to one and then halved. With seven races thus four were included in the ranking.

Mortality
- On April 30, 1961 crashed the winner of the first World Cup run, the teams, Helmut Fath and passenger Alfred Wohlgemuth, heavy in the Eifel Race at the Nürburgring. Wohlgemuth died of his injuries, Fath could not start because of a long hospital stay in season.
- On 16 June 1961, the Briton Ralph Rensen had an accident in the race the Senior TT and died shortly afterwards from his severe neck injuries.
- The Australian Ron Miles died on the evening of August 9, 1961 its the same day suffered in a fall in the 350- cc - training for the Ulster Grand Prix injuries.
