The motorcycle world championship 1960 season was the twelfth in the history of FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.
³ In the class up to 500 cm were seven, ³ in the class up to 250 cc and six in classes up to 350 cc and up to 125 cm and played five races in the sidecars.
Scoring
- The number gewerteter runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then added with one. With six races so four were included in the championship standings.
- If an odd number of races held, the number of runs was added to one and then halved. With seven races thus four were included in the ranking.

Mortality
- The Australian Bob Brown was killed on 23 July 1960 at the 250 - cc - training for the Grand Prix of Germany at the Stuttgart Solitude and died a short time later in a Stuttgart hospital head injury thereby sustained.
