The motorcycle world championship 1977 season was the 29th in the history of the FIM motorcycle road racing World Championship.

In the classes were ³ to 500 cm eleven, in the classes to 350 cc to 250 cc and up to 125 cm ³ ³ and twelve in the class up to 50 cm and held seven races in the sidecars.

  • The Constructors ' World Championship titles were awarded to the manufacturer who introduced the Drivers' World Champion in each class. In the sidecars only the motor manufacturers, Yamaha won the title.
  • For the first time in the history of the Motorcycle World Championship was the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man no official World Cup race more. In its place, moved the inaugural Grand Prix of Great Britain, which took place at the Silverstone Circuit.
  • The 350 cc race at the Grand Prix of Austria was terminated and canceled after a major accident mid-race. Franco Uncini and Johnny Cecotto collided and the track had contaminated with debris. The following drivers crashed and caused a mass accident. The Swiss Hans Stadelmann died on the spot, Dieter Braun had to end his career due to injury and Johnny Cecotto and Patrick Fernandez sidelined for weeks.
  • After the accident in Austria Morbidelli factory driver Paolo Pileri had to pause, his replacement Mario Lega, who had gone as a privateer in the season, won the world title in the 250 cc class.
  • At the end of the season Giacomo Agostini ended his motorcycle World Cup career after 15 World Championship titles and 122 Grand Prix victories.

Mortality

  • The Swiss Hans Stadelmann was in an accident in the 350cc race in Austria died.
  • Giovanni Zigiotto came the 250 cc race at the Grand Prix of Yugoslavia to fall and was overtaken by subsequent Per- Edvard Carlsson. The Italians died eleven days later in a hospital in Rijeka.
  • Ulrich Graf came from Switzerland in the same Grand Prix in the 50 - class lives. He rebounded after falling against a post and was dead on the spot
