The affair Board Liberati

At the start of the 500cc race at the Grand Prix of Belgium, there was a problem in the ignition at the four-cylinder Moto Guzzi Libero Liberati. The Gilera racing manager Roberto Pierso then asked the race director for permission to let Liberati start with the bike by Bob Brown. After consultation with the President of CSI agreed to this and Liberati started the # Browns. During the race laid MV Agusta and Norton protest against this decision. After Liberati had finished the race as the winner, he was therefore disqualified and declared the Norton pilot Jack board the winner. Now Gilera protested his hand against the disqualification and reached that this was revised in January 1958, and Libero Liberati again declared as the winner. For the championship standings but this decision was no longer relevant.

The end of an era

On September 26, 1957, the three Italian brands FB- Mondial, Gilera and Moto Guzzi announced their withdrawal from the Motorcycle World Championship. The reasons for the rising costs of simultaneous drop in sales, the former bad image of motor sport in Italy, and, by the ever faster and stronger machines, endangered safety of the drivers were called. Most drivers concerned were not informed of it directly, but learned the news from the media. The two other active Italian brands, MV Agusta and Ducati, however, emphasized their intention to continue to compete in the World Championship.
