Kvitsøy

Kvitsøy is a commune in the Norwegian Rogaland. It consists of 365 islands. The community is surrounded by the outer parts of Boknafjordes. To the north are the municipalities Karmøy and Bokn, in the east Rennesøy and Randa mountain. The administrative center is Ydstebøhavn. The municipality Kvitsøy has a German municipality director, Andreas upholstery since 1999.

History

Kvitsøy is first in the Saga Snorre (see article: History of Norway ) mentioned. There was the Peace of 1208, which ended the civil war between Birkebeinern and Baglern, concluded between Inge II, Haakon Galen and Philip Simonsson.

Stone Cross

On Kvitsøy there is a 3.90 m high stone cross from the time of the Christianization of Norway. It will be the largest and best preserved stone cross in Norway. Except as a Christian symbol it also served as a navigation mark.

St. Clement's Church

Next to the cross are the foundations of St. Clement's Church. According to legend, it was canceled in 1270. The baptismal font of St. Clement's Church has been found and is now used in the 1620 -built island church.

Lighthouse

The 18 -meter high lighthouse was built in 1829. In 1859 he was raised to 7 m and the beacon is now 45 m above sea level. 1938, the lighthouse was electrified in 1969 and converted to automatic operation.

Kvitsøy - Trafikksentral

In 2003, designed by the architects Jarmund / Vigsnæs AS Kvitsøy - Trafikksentral their provision was passed. The " traffic center " is used as part of a radar network of the vessel traffic monitoring off the west coast of Norway. The distinctive architecture of the shale clad exterior walls is a view point on the island. On the roof there is a viewing platform.

Fauna and Flora

Except Robben ( norw Kobbe ) and small dolphins ( norw nise ) there are no mammals. However, the islands have a rich marine bird life. A variety of plants have found their way to the islands. In addition to native plants, there are also plants that were settled there by the waste dumping from ships in the port of Stavanger in front of the driveway.

Radio stations

In the commune of the Norwegian Broadcasting operates a large transmitter for short and medium wave ( radio stations Kvitsøy ).
