Eigersund

Eigersund is a commune in the Norwegian Rogaland. The municipality is located around the city Egersund, which is also the administrative center. Eigersund bordered to the west by the municipality Hå, on the north by the municipalities Bjerkreim, Sirdal (Vest - Agder county) and Lund and on the east by the municipality Sokndal. The geographical area in which the municipality is called Dalane.

The name comes from the Old Norse Eigersund. Eikundarsund, the sound between the oaks.

The local newspaper for Eigersund and municipalities Bjerkreim, Lund og Sokndal is published in Egersund and is called Dalane Tidende. It replaces the former newspaper Egersundsposten, which was the oldest newspaper in Rogaland and ended production in 1940 resigned.

Economy

Importance are fishing and agriculture. In terms of landed Quantum is Egersund Norway's largest fishing port. In agriculture, sheep farming, milk production and the cultivation of fruits and berries are most represented.

Traffic

The Riksvei 44 goes north through Jæren to Sandnes and Stavanger and south through Sokndal and Jøssingfjord Flekkefjord. The town of Egersund has ferry connection to Hanstholm in Denmark, as well as to Haugesund and Bergen, which is operated by Fjord Line. The Stavanger Airport Sola is one hour away from Egersund.

The first railroad west of the country, the train service between Egersund and Stavanger ( Jærbanen ) was opened on 27 February 1878.
