La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage

La Fresnaye -au -Sauvage is a French municipality with 221 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

The village of La Fresnaye is situated in the north of the department of Orne and 17 kilometers west of Argentan; a few kilometers to the south runs the main road that connects the cities of Argentan and Flers each other. The municipal area is drained by the river Orne and the creeks Le Gue Blandin and Vienne.

History

Since the 14th century, the existence of Vauquelin family is busy in the place; Acquired in 1475 a member of the family control of La Fresnaye. As the descendant of Jean Vauquelin de La Fresnaye was born in 1536 in the village and became a poet and as a vassal of the French king great notoriety. For lifetime Vauqelins existed in La Fresnaye a castle that was owned by his family. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period was under the jurisdiction of the parish Briouze.

The name component of the name Fresnaye goes back to the word Frênaie, which stands for an ash forest. In Sauvage is presumably to the family name of a nobleman, to whom the place belonged in earlier times.

Development

The municipality of La Fresnaye -au -Sauvage was born in 1793 during the French Revolution and was there first allocated to the canton of Briouze before moving in 1801 in the Canton Putanges -Pont- Écrepin, which she still belongs today. The territory of the municipality expanded 1821 when the formerly independent municipality of Saint -Malo, which this year numbered 162 inhabitants, was assigned to the comprehensive 558 residents neighboring community of La Fresnaye -au -Sauvage.

Demographics

In 1836, a peak was reached in the population with 722 registered inhabitants; However, in the second half of the 19th century, the population increased rapidly. This trend has been reinforced massively in the time of the First World War. After a temporary recovery, the population fell to less than 200 in the 1990s, but could then easily recover again.
