Lauria

Lauria is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 13,126 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata. The municipality borders on the Calabrian province of Cosenza.

History

The site was probably founded in the 10th century near the Shrine of Our Lady dell'Armo. The fortifications of the place was built by the Saracens. In the 12th century, Lauria seat of a Norman lord named Gibel of Lauria and his son Richard of Lauria.

1806, the city was destroyed by French soldiers of General André Masséna and killed the inhabitants because they had supported the Bourbons.

Traffic

Lauria is located on the Strada Statale 19 by the municipality shall also undertake the Autostrada A3 from Naples to Reggio di Calabria. Since 1978 there is no more connection to the railway network. Previously, the station of trains of the track - Spezzano Albanese Lagonegro was served.
