Leuchtenberg is a market in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab and a member of the administrative community Tännesberg.

Geography

Geographical Location

Leuchtenberg is located south of pastures in Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park. Near Leuchtenberg are the scenic valleys of the rivers Pfreimd, Lerau and Luhe.

History

In 1124 Leuchtenberg was first mentioned. It was home to the Landgrave of Leuchtenberg. The market Leuchtenberg was the seat of an Upper and a Lower Court and belonged to the princely Landgraviate Leuchtenberg, who was kurbayerisch since 1714 after the extinction of the house of Leuchtenberg. The Elector had the title Landgraf Leuchtenberg and led the shine bergische escutcheon partly in his own coat of arms.

1817 was Eugène de Beauharnais by the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph proposed by Maximilian Montgelas title of Duke of Leuchtenberg without local territorial possessions; his property was the newly formed Principality of Eichstätt for him.

In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community Leuchtenberg.

In 1842, a large part of the village fell victim to a fire.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, until then independent municipality Lerau was incorporated. On 1 July 1976 Döllnitz was added to the 1945 or 1946 incorporated place Preppach and parts of the resolution at the same time Woppenrieth community. Michldorf followed on 1 May 1978.

Coat of arms

Blazon: square with silver escutcheon, is a blue bar; 1 and 4 in Red Oak branch with a golden acorn, 2 and 3 in gold with a green vine hops umbel.

The coat of arms has been known since the 15th century.

Culture and sights

Monuments

  • About the village of Leuchtenberg rises the ruined castle Leuchtenberg. It is the largest and best- preserved ruin of Upper Palatinate. There the castle Leuchtenberg Festival every year from May to August organized by the State Theater of Upper Palatinate. The castle is the most visited open-air stage of the Upper Palatinate.
  • The parish church of St. Margaret, the Thirty Years War in 1621 and after the fire of 1842 completely destroyed and 1889 severely damaged to the choir, was always rebuilt on the old foundations of the original church.

Leuchtenberg is located near the motorway 6 (Saarbrücken - Waidhaus ) and the federal highways 14 ( Stockach - Waidhaus ) and 22 ( Bamberg - Cham) (Bayerische Ostmark Street / Glass Road ).

Others

For the successful renovation of the historic center Leuchtenberg in 1992 awarded the Europa Nostra Award. Leuchtenberg is named one of 1968 based in Regensburg until 1996 Catholic fraternity.
