Liz J. Patterson

Elizabeth Johnston " Liz " Patterson ( born November 18, 1939 in Columbia, South Carolina) is an American politician. Between 1987 and 1993, she represented the state of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Elizabeth Johnston, so her maiden name, was born as the daughter of Olin D. Johnston ( 1896-1965 ). Her father had been Governor and U.S. Senator for South Carolina. She attended the public schools in Kensington ( Maryland) and Spartanburg (South Carolina). She then studied until 1962 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Between 1962 and 1964 she worked for the Peace Corps. Later she worked on the staff of Congressman James Robert Mann. She became a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1975 and 1976 she served on the County Council in Spartanburg County. Between 1979 and 1986, she was sitting in the Senate of South Carolina.

1986 Liz Patterson was in the fourth constituency of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There it began on January 3, 1987, to succeed Carroll A. Campbell. After two re- elections she was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1993 three legislative periods. In the elections of 1992, Patterson lost to Bob Inglis. In 1994, she ran unsuccessfully for the office of Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. Today she teaches the subject political science at Spartanburg Methodist College. She is also Democratic Party chairman in Spartanburg County.
