Maewo

Maéwo (also: Aurora ) is an island in the southwest Pacific New Hebrides and part of the island republic of Vanuatu. She is one of the three main islands of the province Penama and has an area of approximately 303 km ².

Maéwo is located 100 kilometers east of Espiritu Santo. The elongated 56 km long and an average of only five kilometers wide island is separated by the Patterson passage of its southern neighbor island Pentecôte.

The island is hilly (up to 811 m high) and densely forested. Some settlements are found on the coastal strip, about Lakarere on the northeast coast. 1979 1,822 people lived on Maéwo.
